Alexander Treliving answered on 2 Dec 2025:
My job as a Local Land & Property Gazetteer Officer is great fun, especially if you like working with geographic data and maps. I manage geospatial data to make sure every place has the right name, address and location, so people can find it easily.
I mostly work on my own, though I’m part of a wider ICT team so it doesn’t get too lonely! There’s also a network of other people across the country who do the same job as me, which is great for job specific support.
My job is very desk based though I do pop outside for site visits every now and again. This is especially important if a property is difficult to find using a map.
Although I go to the office for face-to-face team meetings once a month, I’m lucky to be able to work from home, which is great as it means I have no commute and can achieve a better work-life balance.

My job involves lots of geography. I make maps🗺️ with location data. I have to make decisions based on environmental settings, like “can we put a pond here on this type of geology?” I use lots of data including elevations, soil data, geology, historic land use, flooding and many many more.

My job is very varied. I work from home, but manage a lot of people across the west of England and Wales; those people are flying drones, or out surveying the landscape to capture changes like new houses, or roads, to help the government/local councils/emergency services/car sat navs make good decisions.
Whilst I’m at a desk a lot, I do get to go around the country and see my teams, to solve problems and help direct their work. Each day is different, from meetings, to organising new equipment or safety processes, or fixing things to make sure we’re keeping the map of the UK up to date

My job varies day to day but I am able to decide what I do each day which is great fun! Because I am conducting research by myself, I am able to work to my own schedule.
Some days I can be in a river taking samples of water and bugs, others I’ll be in a lab analyzing my samples. Some days I can be at my desk analyzing data and writing up my results for others to see. I also teach and help run workshops and conferences for other scientists.
Each day can be different but that is my favorite thing about it!

Keith Thomas answered on 10 Dec 2025:
As i work self employed i dont consider i have a “job” as such but am responsible for earning my living. I get rewarded directly for my own hard work and effort. That does however mean i could earn nothing or lots of money depending on my success in winning new contracts. Fortunately i have been very successful and established a track record for winning tenders with public bodies.
What i really like is no two days are the same. I have to work to deadlines especially when submitting tenders for new work – these can be stressful putting in additional time around existing client work but i enjoy putting forward proposals to sell my experience and work out how best to deliver the client objectives and make a compelling bid
I will then also have client projects at different stages – some starting out getting to know the client, some under research thinking about my advice and others where i am preparing presentations and reports. so this week i have been thinking about what we could suggest to do with some vacant buildings in a town centre, estimating the cost for infrastructure to open up major new employment sites and analysing the profitability of new development using spreadsheets and maths.

Every day my job can be so different. I may have a daily plan of what I was going to do but it all goes out of the window when I am called to support another officer or attend an incident. I have to meet a lot of members of the public to explain how they can look after the environment and I do the same for farmers.
I work in a team of 6 other environment officers who I mentor and guide as they are all new to the Agency.
I am in the office 1 day a week, working at home at least 1 day a week and the other 3 days a week I am usually out in the countryside.
