For me, geography is so broad and covers so many interesting topics that I think it is a great field to work in! Whether you are interested in human geography – looking at how people interact with space, economics, geopolitics – or physical geography – climate science, water science, atmospheric science etc – it has something for everyone! You also learn a wide range of skills from interview skills to analytical chemistry!

Passion really. I care about how society lives in this world, and safeguards it for future generations.

I’m motivated by the opportunity to try and protect and improve the natural environment and a career in geography is a great way to try and do that. Pretty well all of the major challenges we face in the world today – climate change, war and conflict, poverty etc. – are all in some way linked to geography. Geographers have never been more important.

One of the reasons I chose geography is that it gives you a really broad understanding of how the world works. At university I remember hearing a statistic that around 75% of jobs don’t actually require a very specific degree. Geography is great because it prepares you for lots of different paths, not just “being a geographer.”

The most important thing geography teaches you is how to think. You learn to ask questions about the world around you instead of just accepting things as they are. Why are cities built where they are? Why do floods happen in some places and not others? How do people and the environment affect each other? Why do we keep building in dumb places?

That curiosity and critical thinking is incredibly useful in almost any job. For me personally, I’ve always loved understanding how people interact with the environment – from natural hazards like earthquakes and floods, to bigger questions about sustainability and how we take care of the planet.
