I manage geographic data that makes sure every place is given an accurate name, address and location. This is super important because accurate location data helps police, fire and ambulance services respond quickly to emergencies. If they know where to go and how to get there, they can arrive much quicker, making it vital for public safety and disaster management.

Have you ever navigated somewhere using a map app on your phone? If you have, you’ve probably used location data to get there. Without the geographic location data I help to manage, we’d be lost…literally!

I am the first person in the world to conduct my research, so I am answering questions no one has thought about before, which I think is super exciting!

This means that my results can be used not inly to inform future research but also to help governments and water companies make decisions around new environmental policies.

Geography-related jobs are incredibly important – understanding and managing our (societal and natural)environment is key for our species’ long-term survival as well as our ability to achieve equality.
Government-related jobs are important for taking this knowledge and putting into practice – known as policy. This is the foundation for our democratic society.

I work very closely with organisations that aim to help people who are in need because they lost their homes or have been displaced by disasters or conflict. These humanitarian organisations want to better understand the impacts of their actions on the people they are trying to help, so I do research that helps to answer some of the questions they have. In that small way, I think I am doing my part to help those most in need all around the world (and with the help of many other people all hoping to do what is best).

a hard question… my job is to protect the environment .i.e. land, air and water from pollution. Sometimes we can plan to prevent pollution by passing laws and then we must ensure the laws are not broken. However, there are times when we cannot plan and have to react with others such as the Fire and Rescue service or with the police to stop pollution impacting on people lives and health as well as impacting animals, birds and fish and even the soil.
