About Me:
I live in York with my 3-year-old Patterdale Terrier, Jessie.🐶 Outside of work, I enjoy Bouldering 🧗(when I’m not injured), Running 🏃➡️(when I’m not injured) and when I’m injured, I enjoy building Lego! 🧱

I first tried bouldering at my Fresher’s Fair at university in 2017, but didn’t fully get in to it until 2021. Since then I have visited many cool climbing gyms, attended climbing events, nursed tendonitis and built up to my max difficulty of V8! Sadly, in February 2025 I broke my fibula falling off a wall, which I am still recovering from, but I recently sent a few V5s and a V6 so I’m getting there!
I started running in 2022, and quickly got obsessed. I ended up running my parkrun PB of 19:30 before deciding to sign up to the York 10 Mile, Brass Monkey Half Marathon and Manchester Marathon – the latter of which scarred me for life and I haven’t ran since!
My favourite Lego set I have built is the Endurance, which kept me busy after my ankle surgery in 2025. It took me most of a weekend and a box of beer to finish it! My dream set is the 2008 Lego Death Star as I am a massive Star Wars nerd, and couldn’t afford it when I was 10!
I rescued Jessie in June 2024, and I can’t imagine my life without her. She has her pros and cons, the former being she loves to play fetch, she is very affectionate and rarely barks and the latter being she enjoys eating things she shouldn’t such as an entire bunch of bananas, multiple loaves of bread and my earplugs!
Outside of those hobbies, I also am of course a geography nerd at heart and being outside hiking, going on city breaks, playing Geoguessr. I also have a few cool old maps dotted around my house!

How I use Geography in my work:
As a GIS Analyst I use Geography every day from manipulating satellite imagery, to identifying features using that imagery. Knowing the context of the land I am mapping, as well as experience mapping individual features over my career allows me to make informed decisions about the landcover of a clients property.
I am also a qualified drone pilot, and I am often sent to clients, often in remote locations to source our own imagery, which gives us more freedom to do more bespoke analysis with.

My Work:
I am a drone pilot and cartographer creating maps for clients who wish to increase the biodiversity of their land.

Using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) I help my team to create detailed maps of landscapes for clients who wish to find areas where they can increase their biodiversity. If you are unaware of GIS, you probably still use it every day. From Google Maps, to Deliveroo to Uber Eats, to Pokemon Go – anything that has a geographical/cartographical reference and overlays data atop it is considered GIS.
I have mapped a lot of areas over my career, but at Fera (my current role) I am often mapping small farms and stately homes to help them assess their land and look for any opportunity for them to increase their biodiversity. This can be allowing an arable (farmed) land to bloom into a wild meadow, or by planting hedgerows along a road, or to plant individual trees across the property.

My Typical Day:
- Wake up at 6
- Walk dog, shower, coffee
- Log on to work computer at 7
- Check emails and Teams for any important updates
- Get another coffee
- Mapping work (usually)
- Lunch
- Mapping work (continued)
- Finish work at 3
- Exercise
- Eat dinner
- Relax

My day doesn’t begin until I have showered, had a coffee and walked Jessie, and since I start work at 7am, I get up quite early! I am one of those people who require multiple alarms as I do like to snooze! Once I am less of a zombie, I will log on to my work computer at 7am and check for any updates from the team, and any emails from the wider company.
After checking my emails, I probably need another coffee, and once I’ve made that I will make a start on any project I am currently doing – usually a mapping project somewhere in the UK. I have to listen to music while I am doing mapping work, as it helps me to concentrate.
If I am in the office I will break around 1230 for lunch with my colleagues, and chat complete rubbish over an overpriced meal deal. I’ll then return to my desk and continue with the project I currently am working towards a deadline for.
After finishing work at 3, I’ll either go to the gym, walk the dog or go bouldering to get some exercise in, and then I’ll head home and either watch Netflix, YouTube or play video games with my friends.

Education:
I went to Ryedale School between 2009 -2014, where I achieved 6A’s and 3B’s (which I guess is now a mix of 6, 7 and 8)
Following school, I studied Geography, Geology and Chemistry at York College and achieved C, C, E.
I started university at the University of the West of England in September 2017, and graduated in 2020 with a 2:1 in BSc Geology (Hons). Some of my modules included a GIS Module of River Dynamics, another GIS Module of Landslide Risk, and a further GIS Module, but more tailored towards theory, and remote sensing. My dissertation was an independent geological mapping project, which I chose to map the coastline between Robin Hoods Bay and Ravenscar in North Yorkshire.
In October 2020, I started my first career-related job at IIC Technologies, which was an entry-level GIS role, mapping for military strategy. Since then I have worked for numerous companies including DEFRA, Natural England, Domino’s Pizza and more recently, Fera Science.
