      I do! I’m a geologist, a scientist who studies rocks, so liking rocks is probably a key part of my job. I think the coolest thing is that every rock has a story to tell about Earth history – how a volcano erupted, how a mountain was made, how an ancient river flowed, where an ancient creature lived. If you know how to read rocks, you can tell a story more than 4.5 billion years in the making!

      Yes! They are very fascinating and you can learn a lot about the environment the sediments (that later became rock) were deposited in. For instance, even the colour can tell you lots. If you see a red rock, the likelihood it contains lots of minerals containing iron (basically rust!), such as haematite. Rocks also contain fossils which can indicate the age of the rock as the time the organism was alive indicates when the sediment creating the rock was deposited.

      Effectively, understanding the features of rocks is like looking back in time!
